Asking for a Pay Increase Takes Tricks—Here's How!

Ladies, fight for what you deserve! Including honors. But change will not happen without you doing something. Try these helpful Cosmo tips for asking for a raise.

Make Your Wish

Enter the boss room with full "ammunition". You must feel super confident with your work performance so far, how much your contribution has provided a big profit to the company. The bottom line: prove yourself indispensable . But NEVER give a reason for wanting a salary increase because of rising fuel prices, a remote office or because you have parents who must be supported —however sympathetic the leadership is, but if the reasons given are not related to the company's bottom line , then be prepared to be rejected. Describe your brilliant performance, and a raise will follow.

Provide Supporting Data

Yup, a black and white statement will certainly be more memorable than you showing off your achievements verbally. Before meeting with the boss, write down your responsibilities and achievements during this year such as deadlines , client satisfaction with project execution, and your accuracy in managing the budget. You can also ask your supervisor to ask for feedback from three office colleagues about your performance. Give the evaluation report to your boss a week before the meeting for him to read, but if it turns out that during the meeting he hasn't read it either, offer a solution to reschedule the meeting so that the two of you can talk more productively.

Tactical Thinking

Okay, you're in front of the boss, and he's read the report. If he doesn't raise the issue of a salary increase, then direct the discussion there by saying, " My track record has proven that I have fulfilled all the responsibilities given, even I often handle additional work, so I feel I deserve a raise." But don't shrink if the answer turns out to be negative—if the reason is because the company's finances are currently in trouble, then ask when this issue can be discussed again, is it three months later? Or a year? Write down on paper a commitment from your boss so you can follow up.

Decide What You Want

If you feel your boss isn't giving you a satisfactory answer, well , maybe it's time to look elsewhere. However, if you really like your job and your company, maybe you can provide an alternative solution such as a company paying for the career course/ workshop you want. If you include the most valuable employee in the office, surely your boss will really consider it. There is always a path to a better career—and salary— and sometimes it's up to you to make it happen!
